Installing Pneumatic Push-In Fittings: Specs, Steps and Common Mistakes
Published:
Push-in fittings earned their popularity by eliminating brazing, flaring and wrench work on machine air lines. They still have a defined operating envelope and a right way to assemble them — ignore either and you inherit leaks.
What the fittings are rated for
| Max working pressure | 1.0 MPa (10.2 kgf/cm²) standard series |
|---|---|
| Vacuum use | Limit vacuum to about 10 Torr (−13 kPa) |
| Tube materials | Nylon (PA) or polyurethane (PU) |
| Media | Compressed air, water (non-silicone, non-flammable service) |
| Body materials | Brass, stainless steel, engineering plastic; aging-resistant rubber seals |
Why push-in beats threaded assemblies on the bench
- Fast, one-hand installation; compact bodies save panel space.
- Dozens of shapes — unions, elbows, tees, reducers — cover any routing need.
- The tube can still rotate after installation, so actuator lines self-align instead of twisting the seal.
- Elliptical (oval) release rings give a larger thumb surface, so tubes disconnect without pliers.
- Taper threads arrive pre-coated with PTFE sealant — good sealing with no tape.
Installation procedure
- Cut the tube square with a proper tube cutter — a razor-slanted cut is the top cause of slow leaks.
- Inspect the outer 20 mm for scratches; the O-ring seals on this surface.
- Push the tube straight in and bottom it out against the fitting’s internal stop, then tug to confirm the collet has gripped.
- Tighten the stud: hand-tight plus about a quarter turn for pre-coated taper threads; fit an O-ring or bonded washer on parallel (G) studs.
- To release, confirm zero line pressure, push the release ring toward the body, then pull the tube out.
Common mistakes
- Re-using a tube end that was already cut at an angle or nicked by pliers.
- Mixing PTFE tape onto pre-coated threads or O-ring studs — debris lands in the collet.
- Ignoring tube OD tolerance (out-of-spec tube leaks or jams the release ring).
- Using the fitting as a quick-release coupling under pressure — standard push-in fittings are not shut-off couplings.
