Three Common Flow Control Valve Faults and How to Fix Them
Published:
Most flow control valve complaints fall into three buckets: the adjuster does nothing, the set flow drifts, or the valve leaks internally. Each has a short list of causes — and mostly a cleaning or a seal, not a replacement, is the cure.
1. Flow adjustment has no effect
Symptom: turning the handwheel changes nothing at the outlet (simple throttles without a check function are exempt from the reversed-ports case).
Cause: the poppet is radially jammed. If it jams fully closed, the outlet stays at zero flow; jammed at any other opening, flow refuses to change. Contamination is almost always the reason.
Fix: disassemble and clean the valve, remove the debris, reassemble. Also check the ports: on a one-way flow control valve with inlet and outlet reversed, the unit acts as a plain check valve — adjustment will “do nothing” because flow is taking the free path.
2. Flow drifts after it has been set and locked
Symptom: the tuned flow creeps away from its setting, worst near the minimum stable flow.
Causes, in order of likelihood:
- Lock nut worked loose — vibration changes the throttle opening area. Re-tighten and lock-wire or use a nut with insert.
- Throttle orifice partly blocked — dirt accumulates on the edge, shrinking the area and cutting flow; a pressure pulse flushes it away and flow jumps back. Install or refresh upstream filtration.
- Oil temperature change — viscosity shifts with temperature, and so does flow through a fixed opening. Control oil temperature.
- Load pressure change — the pressure drop across the valve moves with the load, and flow follows the square root of that drop. Stabilise the load or use a pressure-compensated valve.
3. Internal leakage increases
Symptom: with the throttle fully closed, flow still passes; or minimum stable flow keeps rising.
Cause: clearance-seal joints always leak a little — which is why a throttle valve must never be used as a shut-off valve. When the sealing faces wear beyond spec, leakage grows until it disturbs the minimum stable flow.
Fix: lap or replace the poppet; put a real shut-off valve in the circuit where isolation is needed.
